Naz, Lotte and Sam took part in the local heats of the English Speaking Union Churchill Public Speaking competition. Other teams attending were Ansford Academy, Taunton School, King’s College and Wells Cathedral School. Lotte was first from our team to appear with Ansford Academy’s chairperson and questioner. She was confident, dynamic and engaging as she delivered her speech “Should Britain be in the forefront of stem cell research?’’ She responded to the questions asked of her from the questioner, as well as the audience, succinctly.
Next, Naz and Sam took to the floor with a guest speaker from King’s College. Naz had the challenging role of setting the tone for their speeches, making all elements cohesive as well as time keeping. She was warm and welcoming whilst managing each distinct aspect of the proceedings. Sam’s questioning was probing and thought provoking, making the speaker work hard to respond accordingly. Sam had already impressively opened the questioning from the floor on the previous topic “Is there more to Paddington bear than his love of marmalade?” It was a very enjoyable evening of high quality, intriguing topics being discussed. Even though we are not through to the next round, the team are looking forward to competing again next year.
